The world is not enough for one man: James Bond. 007 returns to this time do battle with an internationally known and feared terrorist named Victor Zokas aka Renard. Teaming up with a wealthy, powerful, and seductive oil heiress named Elektra King, Renard plans to use a stolen amount of plutonium and a submarine’s nuclear reactor to destroy Istanbul, an area critical for oil transportation, allowing Elektra to gain a monopoly in the industry with her pipeline.
Julietta the Cigar Girl: Would you like to check my figures?
James Bond: Oh, I’m sure they’re perfectly rounded.
James Bond, initially unaware of Elektra's evil intentions, is thrown into one of his most personal assignments ever; he disobeys orders, and is playfully manipulated by Elektra. All the while, M is captured in the process. Bond sides with the beautiful Dr. Christmas Jones to stop Renard from completing his horrific scheme...
Bond is first on a mission in Spain, retrieving stolen reports from a shifty banker named Lachaise. Bond gets the reports back, but Lachaise is killed by Julietta the Cigar Girl before Bond can get any further vital information from him. Bond has his life saved by an unknown sniper and gets away. Later on, at MI6 headauarters, Sir Robert King recieves his stolen money back from Bond and M, who arranged it to be collected for him. King is killed however when a signal from his lapel pin sets off a bomb in the money.
Moneypenny: James! Have you brought me a souvenir from your trip? Chocolates? An engagement ring?
James Bond: I thought you might enjoy one of these.
Moneypenny: How romantic. I know exactly where to put that.
James Bond: Oh Moneypenny, the story of our relationship...close, but no cigar.
Bond rushes to the scene and sees Julietta ready to fire at him from her boat on the Thames. A chase follows, ending in a hot-air balloon above the Millenium Dome. Julietta blows herself up, saying no-one could protect her from ‘him’ if she gave any information up. Bond then sustains a shoulder injury from the blast. Later on Bond manages to get himself assigned on the case to go after and watch Elektra King, the daughter of the late Sir Robert. Bond is attracted to Elektra, but knows he should only be a shadow. He later saves her from a Parahawk attack while surverying the pipeline.
Later on the two go to Zukovsky's casino, where Elektra loses a $1 million dollar bet and then leaves. While this is happening, Renard meets with Davidov, Elektra's head of security. Bond later kills Davidov and takes his place as Dr. Arkov, heading into Kazakstan, where he then meets Dr. Christmas Jones. Bond, under the guise of Arkov heads into the bunker and holds Renard at gunpoint. Renard explains how it was he that saved Bond’s life at the banker’s office, because Bond brought the money with the bomb right where Renard wanted: to Sir Robert King.
James Bond: I usually hate killing an unarmed man. Cold-blooded murder is a filthy business. But in your case, I feel nothing, just like you.
Renard: A man tires of being executed.
Mass chaos then occurs when a gunfight breaks out, (where Bond’s real indentity is revealed also) Renard and his men escaping with the bomb, while Bond and Christmas take cover. Bond and Christmas escape, but so does Renard. After this, Bond confronts Elektra, but this is cut short when it appears her pipeline is under attack. M comes into the field with Bond, and Bond and Christmas leave to stop the bomb in the pipeline. Bond and Christmas survive, and Elektra's true intentions are revealed when she takes M hostage.
Zukovsky: I must call Security...and congratulate them!
Later on Bond chases Elektra and Renard down, with the help of Zukovsky. Elektra's loss to Zukovsky in the casino was a payment for the submarine, which Zukovsky thought was only for smuggling. Bond is caught and tortured by Elektra, but manages to escape, again thanks to Zukovsky, and kills Elektra. Zukosvsky appears to have been killed in the process. He also frees M in the process. Bond then heads into the submarine, freeing Christmas, and kills Renard, stopping him from destroying the city. The fight is vicious, as Renard has nothing to lose (as a result of the lodged bullet in his brain).
James Bond: You’re really going to commit suicide for her?
Renard: You forget. I’m already dead.
James Bond: Haven’t you heard? So is she.
Bond and Christmas then finally get some alone time, toasting drinks over fireworks.
